Transportation of valuable cargo

Transportation of particularly valuable and sensitive goods

Fragile goods are goods that require particularly careful and careful transport. During transportation, carriage and storage the following factors may affect the cargo: mechanical and climatic effects such as – shock, vibration, jolts, temperature changes, precipitation, humidity.

Fragile goods include: products made of clay, glass and ceramics, large and household appliances and office equipment, etc. The question is how to ensure that during delivery and loading/unloading operations the transported fragile goods are not damaged or destroyed? When solving this problem, you should take into account the peculiarity of packaging as its main function which is to protect the cargo from various kinds of influences which may occur during transportation. Good quality packaging helps to virtually 100% prevent any accidental damage to cargo. It should be remembered that packaging “must” properly provide convenience of storage, unloading and loading.

Good quality, durable packaging should be used but remember that for fragile goods, soft pads must be placed inside the packaging to hold the goods in place. Particularly fragile or valuable goods should be packed in a double-layer package with increased strength. Wrapping is completed by wrapping the shipment with a special device or, if this is not available, this procedure can be replaced by wrapping with packing tape.

When transporting fragile goods, bubble wrap is very popular – it is a special type of packaging material with lots of air bubbles. Using such film, especially in several layers, significantly reduces the risk of damage to fragile goods of various types both during transportation and loading and unloading, its relatively low cost increases the positive effect of its use.

An additional way to protect fragile goods from damage and deformation during transportation is to attach special symbols to crates, boxes or containers depicting a glass with a chipped corner. In addition, the symbol can be accompanied by a large-print text message, e.g. “Beware! Do not drop it!”. These measures can provide additional protection for fragile cargo by preventing loading and unloading operators from handling crates of fragile cargo or the container’s contents requiring special attention and care.

The modern transport network successfully uses shipping containers which are iron boxes of standardised dimensions for the carriage of small fragile goods. They can contain any type of load – the only limit is the maximum permissible weight in relation to the container volume. Transport containers are loaded and unloaded with the help of manipulators or “squids”.

The transport of valuable goods requires special security and transport measures. Cargo can be valuable because of its high value; in general, there are many types of valuable cargo: antiques, jewellery, and expensive equipment. When transporting this kind of cargo, the best option will be cars with special characteristics, then the security and escort of the cargo on the way will go as additional services.
